Why this is structured as one system

Most agencies sell these services separately. Different teams. Different priorities. Different definitions of success.

The result is work that doesn’t compound:

  • Content that can’t rank because technical constraints were ignored
  • Paid traffic that doesn’t convert because landing pages weren’t engineered
  • SEO gains that don’t hold because site architecture wasn’t built for it

Digital Upwelling treats development, SEO, advertising, AI visibility, and CRO as connected disciplines from day one. A single engagement covers what a typical agency would fragment across four vendors. The discovery phase determines which combination of disciplines actually fits the business, rather than forcing every client into the same scope template.

This is why our engagements tend to be deeper than a single-service agency relationship, and shorter than a typical multi-vendor arrangement. The work is scoped around outcomes, not around how many billable teams can be put on the account.

Pillar discipline

AI Search Visibility: the discipline the rest of our work is built around.

AI search visibility is the practice of structuring a website so it can appear in AI-generated answers, featured snippets, voice responses, and citations from systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. It combines two disciplines: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

This is not a plugin or a content audit. AI search visibility is built into how a site is architected, written, and maintained from the start. Content structure, schema, internal linking, entity definition, and technical foundation are designed together, so visibility compounds over time instead of degrading.

What this means in practice

Answer-first content structure. Pages engineered so the first paragraph can be extracted into an AI summary or snippet on its own.

Schema as an entity layer. Structured data designed to define what your business is, not just to improve rankings.

Crawler policy decisions. Explicit, documented choices about how your site is made available to AI systems including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended.

Measurement, not assumption. Quarterly audits of how your brand actually appears in AI-generated answers, with documented adjustments as the underlying systems evolve.

Development & Platforms

The infrastructure layer. Everything above the surface works better when the foundation is engineered correctly.

Website Development & Custom Platforms

What it is. Custom-coded websites, private PHP applications, subscription platforms, and purpose-built CMS solutions for businesses whose operational requirements have outgrown off-the-shelf tools. Delivered either through direct development (we write the code) or through custom platform delivery (we own the project end to end while external developers write the code under our management).

What it does for the business. Full ownership of the code, data, and revenue stream. No platform fees, no vendor lock-in, and no compromise between business requirements and template constraints. Engineered for performance, security, and long-term scalability.

Subscription Platforms & Custom CMS

What it is. Purpose-built content management and subscription systems for businesses that have outgrown off-the-shelf tools.

What it does for the business. Lets you own your entire revenue stream and content pipeline, without paying a platform tax or accepting their limits.

WordPress Optimization for High-Traffic Sites

What it is. Performance, security, and stability engineering for WordPress installations operating under heavy real-world load. Plugin audits, database tuning, custom theme and plugin development, caching strategy, and infrastructure oversight.

What it does for the business. Keeps high-traffic WordPress sites fast, secure, and reliable. Eliminates the accumulated technical debt that causes most WordPress performance problems. Reduces infrastructure costs by making the existing platform actually work as intended.

WordPress is a legitimate platform at scale, when properly engineered. Most of the time, it is simply not engineered. The difference between a WordPress site that handles traffic well and one that fails under load is almost always the engineering, not the platform.

Growth & Visibility

The acquisition and yield layer. Work that produces measurable traffic, rankings, and conversion improvements.

Technical SEO & On-Page Optimization

What it is. Site architecture, internal linking, schema implementation, Core Web Vitals remediation, crawlability, indexation management, and the on-page content structure that determines how search engines and AI systems parse a site.

What it does for the business. Produces durable, compounding organic visibility that paid traffic cannot replace. Creates the structural prerequisites for AI search visibility, content strategy, and everything else that depends on being crawled and understood correctly.

Technical SEO & On-Page Optimization →

Conversion Rate Optimization

What it is. Systematic improvements to how effectively a site converts visitors into customers, leads, or subscribers. Messaging clarity, page architecture, friction removal, funnel analysis, and structured testing.

What it does for the business. Increases the yield of existing traffic, which multiplies the return on every other visibility investment. A site that converts at four percent instead of two percent produces twice the revenue from the same SEO and advertising spend.

Conversion Rate Optimization →

Performance Advertising (Google Ads & Meta)

What it is. Strategy, tracking infrastructure, creative, landing pages, and continuous optimization for paid campaigns on Google Ads, Meta, and related platforms.

What it does for the business. Produces qualified leads or sales within weeks, while the organic and AI visibility layers build over longer horizons. Provides the immediate-term revenue that funds longer-term strategic investment.

How we work

A phased approach. Clarity first, then build.

Phase 1

Discovery

We audit where you are, identify what actually needs to change, and produce a prioritized roadmap before any build work begins. The deliverable is clarity, not code.

Phase 2

Design and Problem Solving

Architecture, content structure, schema strategy, and the integration points across disciplines are worked out in full before development starts. This is where the system gets designed.

Phase 3

Development and Execution

Build, launch, monitor, iterate. Performance and visibility are tested against real behavior, not internal checklists.

Pricing is phased and scoped in small, medium, and large tiers based on complexity. The investment is defined before any implementation begins.

How to decide where to start

Most new clients arrive knowing something needs to change but not exactly which service they need. A short guide based on the patterns we see most often.

If your site is slow, unstable, or breaking under traffic, start with Technical SEO or WordPress Optimization depending on platform. Nothing else compounds on top of an unsound foundation.

If your site converts existing traffic poorly, start with Conversion Rate Optimization. Fixing conversion before scaling traffic prevents spending more money on visitors who won’t convert.

If competitors appear in AI answers and you don’t, start with AI Search Visibility. The technical and content work that produces citation eligibility is the foundational engagement we build other work around.

If you need qualified leads or revenue now, start with Performance Advertising. Paid campaigns produce measurable results within weeks while longer-term visibility work builds over months.

If your business has outgrown its current platform, start with Website Development & Custom Platforms. Migration off a restrictive platform is the right call when platform limitations are materially affecting business outcomes.

If you’re not sure, start with a discovery call. Discovery is how we determine the right sequence for your specific situation, and it produces clear recommendations whether you engage further with us or not.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to engage Digital Upwelling for all services, or can I start with one?

You can start with one. Most engagements do, and discovery is how we determine which single service produces the most immediate value for your specific situation. We frequently expand into adjacent disciplines as the work progresses, but that decision is made based on results and fit, not committed to upfront.

How is Digital Upwelling different from hiring separate specialists for each service?

Separate specialists optimize for their own discipline, which frequently produces work that doesn’t integrate well. A paid media specialist may build campaigns that drive traffic to landing pages an SEO specialist wouldn’t have approved of. A developer may build a site that a technical SEO wouldn’t have structured that way. Digital Upwelling delivers these disciplines as a connected system, which eliminates the integration friction that multi-vendor arrangements typically produce. The tradeoff is that we work with fewer clients at deeper engagement levels, rather than many clients at shallow ones.

Which service should I start with?

Discovery determines this based on your specific situation, but the decision-guide section above covers the most common patterns. The short version: start with the service addressing your most immediate constraint. If multiple constraints feel equally pressing, discovery resolves the sequencing.

Can I engage for one service now and add others later?

Yes. Most client relationships expand over time as results from the initial engagement justify additional investment. Because our services are designed to integrate, adding a discipline to an existing engagement is typically more efficient than starting from scratch with a new vendor.

How do you decide which services a client needs?

Discovery produces a prioritized recommendation based on what’s actually constraining business outcomes. We don’t package services into predefined tiers. We don’t recommend services the business doesn’t need in order to expand scope. If a specific discipline isn’t the right investment for your situation, we’ll say so, and if the overall fit isn’t right, we’ll say that too.

What’s the minimum engagement size?

Engagements are scoped in small, medium, and large tiers based on complexity. Specific minimums are set during discovery based on what the work actually requires. We are structured as a boutique firm, which means we take on a small number of clients at deeper engagement levels. Very small projects are typically better served by other vendors, and we’ll say so when that’s the case.
