Search is being rewritten. Most sites aren’t ready.

A growing share of the answers people receive never pass through a traditional search result page. They come from AI overviews, voice assistants, generative summaries, and large language models that are increasingly trusted as direct sources of information.

Most businesses are watching this shift from the outside. Websites built for the old model of search, keyword targeting, link volume, and surface-level content, are losing visibility in ways that often don’t register in their analytics dashboards until the lost ground is hard to recover.

Digital Upwelling exists because that gap is going to widen. Businesses that build infrastructure for the new search layer now will compound advantage over the next five years. Businesses that wait will spend that same period trying to catch up.

The name

Why “Upwelling.”

Upwelling is an oceanographic process where cold, nutrient-rich water rises from the deep ocean to the surface, where it fuels almost all the life above it. Nothing visible at the surface functions without the unglamorous infrastructure below.

The metaphor fits the work. What moves a business online is rarely what a visitor sees on the page. It’s how the site is structured, how content is organized, how systems connect, and how all of it is built to be understood by search engines and AI. The surface only works when the foundation does.

Four principles that shape every engagement.

Development, SEO, advertising, and AI visibility are one system.

Most agencies sell these as separate services and deliver them with separate teams. The result is work that doesn’t compound, because the parts don’t reinforce each other. We treat them as connected disciplines from day one.

Infrastructure beats tactics.

Short-term wins are easy to sell and easy to undo. We build foundations that hold up as search engines, AI systems, and user behavior continue to change, because they will.

Earned visibility is the goal.

Paid traffic is useful, but it rents attention. Technical credibility, entity authority, and citable content earn attention. We build for both, with the weight on what earns.

The answer matters more than the ranking.

Page one is still valuable. Being cited in the AI-generated answer above the page-one results is more valuable. We build for both, with priority on the answer layer, because that’s where the leverage is moving.

How we work

A phased approach, built to protect your roadmap and your budget.

Phase 1

Discovery

We don’t write code or publish content until we understand the system. This phase produces a technical audit, an AI visibility baseline, and a roadmap that shows what’s going to change and why.

Phase 2

Design and Problem Solving

Architecture, content structure, schema strategy, and UX decisions are worked out in full before anything is built. This is where the integrated system gets drawn up.

Phase 3

Development and Execution

Build, launch, monitor, iterate. Performance and visibility are tested against real behavior, not internal checklists.

Pricing is phased. Each engagement is scoped in small, medium, or large tiers based on complexity and scope.

A small number of clients. On purpose.

We take on a limited number of clients at a time. That’s a structural choice, not a marketing line. A boutique firm can only produce boutique work when the team stays focused.

We’re a strong fit for:

  • Established businesses with enough traction that technical and visibility work will compound
  • Teams that want long-term ownership of their stack instead of permanent dependency on an agency
  • Operators who want to understand what’s being built and why, not just be handed deliverables
  • Companies in technical or considered-purchase categories where authority and citation quality drive revenue

We’re probably not a fit for:

  • Businesses looking for the cheapest vendor
  • Projects that need execution faster than strategy can support
  • Clients who want to outsource the thinking rather than collaborate on it

We’d rather say on the first call that we’re not the right firm than accept work where we can’t bring real value.

Selected work

Selected work.

We’ve built custom platforms, optimized high-traffic environments, and led technical and AI visibility work across specialty media, niche tourism, and B2B cybersecurity consulting.

In The Spread

Multi-quarter engagement spanning custom platform delivery and active content strategy, SEO, and AI search visibility work for the sport fishing industry’s first subscription-based instructional video platform. The custom platform delivery work covered specification, developer selection, contract negotiation, and build oversight for the underlying PHP-based CMS. The active visibility work covers homepage architecture redesign, a 76-category content taxonomy rebuild, 100+ landing page rewrites to extractable answer-first standards, schema standardization across course, video, FAQ, and article surfaces, and a weekly editorial program built on a repeatable five-stage workflow.

Colio Sportfishing

Strategic website build and custom booking architecture for a captain-led sportfishing operation in Costa Rica. The engagement combined hub-and-spoke information architecture, captain-led brand positioning, and a custom checkout system that handles international deposit-and-balance splits, Costa Rica VAT logic, and multi-property package bundling natively. The site launched with ten blog posts already published, giving the editorial spine immediate topical mass.

Idenhaus

Active AI search visibility engagement for a B2B cybersecurity consulting firm specializing in FedRAMP, CMMC, and identity governance services. The work began with a comprehensive visibility and authority assessment that diagnosed the gap as a structural and positioning problem rather than a content quality or rebuild problem. Current execution covers schema implementation, metadata optimization, topic clustering across IAM, CMMC, and cybersecurity content, semantic internal linking, conversational prose rewrites, and question-based content architecture, all designed to surface the firm in AI-generated answers for high-intent compliance queries before competitors frame the conversation.

Leadership

Who you’re working with.

Seth Horne, founder and owner of Digital Upwelling

Digital Upwelling is led by Seth Horne, who has spent more than two decades building distribution systems for niche expert content. The thread running through that work is consistent: capture the knowledge that lives in the heads of recognized authorities, structure it for the audiences who need it, and build the technical and editorial infrastructure that lets it scale.

In 2014, Seth launched In The Spread, the sport fishing industry’s first subscription-based instructional video streaming platform. The platform now hosts more than 200 professional courses taught by working captains and guides, generates high six-figure annual revenue with 85% subscriber retention, and produces 35% year-over-year organic traffic growth across a content library of 300+ articles and 200+ videos. He’s an early adopter of AI-assisted editorial and production workflows on that platform, which means the AI search visibility methodology Digital Upwelling sells is methodology he’s already executing on a property he operates.

Before founding Digital Upwelling, Seth led business development and strategy at Full Throttle Media, where he generated more than $4.5M in cumulative revenue across sponsorship sales, branded video content, and educational programming, and grew the company’s digital subscriber base from 5,000 to 45,000 users. Across his career, he has produced and managed projects across the United States, Canada, Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Australia, which informs how Digital Upwelling approaches international engagements. He holds degrees in Economics and Finance from Florida State University, which shapes how he thinks about every engagement: as a structural investment in the business’s long-term return rather than a tactical spend.
